Whenever we'd visit Din Tai Fung, ordering some xiao long baos was always a must. But this time around, we wanted to focus our orders on other items on the menu... ideally items with low carbs (in my mind, no rice... but I'm sure some items here probably had higher carbohydrates!). Anyway, here's the round up of things we got:
Spicy pickled cucumber (Php 125) - to us, we were expecting the cucumber to be really spicy. Thank goodness it wasn't what we thought it was... instead, it was mildy-spiced... which was just perfect. The mild chili oil over the pickled cucumbers complemented the appetizer, rather than overpowered it. It was pretty refreshing~ I exclaimed while eating that I wanted to try making this at home, if I can!
Stir fried Chinese broccoli (Php 165) - Okay, while these are vegetables, they aren't as healthy once you stir fry them like this. But hey, they generally taste better (on this note, I felt this order lacked a little bit of salt)!
Crispy beef strips (Php 235) - based from this photo, it looks really spicy. It actually reminded me a lot of those dried chili peppers. But when you take your first bite, you'd be pretty amazed how different things would turn out to be! Yes, it was crispy... and it was sweet! Try to think of how sweet and sour pork has these really crispy bits of flour mixed with the batter. That's how this one tastes like... but it's like every beef strip is covered with this mixture.
It really tastes delicious and I'd order this again! Side note though, perhaps it was just me thinking of it, but apparently it wasn't the case - but I doubted for a moment I was eating beef strips (Sarah was convinced she was eating worms haha). But yeah, the shape is quite unusual for the regular proportions we'd expect out of beef! Anyway, do order this, it's great!
Steamed fish fillet in superior soy sauce (Php 495) - what I liked about this fillet was that they really chose an appropriate, light soy sauce. The dish was light... and the fillet was really tender (you'd have to be extra careful pinching it with your chopsticks, or it might just fall apart).
For some reason, I expected the order to be smaller (I know it costs Php 495)... but it was really just right for 2 people!
Salted egg yolk prawns (Php 375) - of all items we ordered, this for me was the most filling! Well, it was composed of several chunks of solid prawns, after all! No qualms or complaints with this dish... it was really great~ it wasn't overly salty, the flavours weren't entirely overpowering... and you'd still enjoy the prawns for what it is!
The thing with Din Tai Fung is that it's just so tempting to just order more stuff, especially if you're enjoying your meal a lot. Their service (and internal processes) at the BGC branch has been consistently superb, despite the large volumes of people who eat there... and it really contributes to the dining experience. So yes, there is life outside their xiao long bao, and I'd love to review other items again in the future! :)
